The City of Seattle's LGBTQ+ Pride Will Go Ahead During FIFA Tournament Despite Objections from Iran and Egypt

Arrangements to hold Pride-focused celebrations throughout the city amid next summer’s FIFA World Cup tournament are proceeding as scheduled, despite the Egyptian and Iranian football federations voiced strong concerns about a scheduled “Pride Match.”

Stadium Policy and City Celebrations

Local organizers stated clearly they are “moving forward as planned” with Pride activities in the city center. This coincides with the tournament group match featuring Iran and Egypt on June 26th. Additionally, FIFA has a policy allowing rainbow flags to be brought into the match venue.

“As the local organising committee, SeattleFWC26’s role is to prepare our city to host the matches and manage the city experience outside of the match venue,” stated the vice-president of communications.

Legal Context Behind the Formal Complaints

Homosexuality is illegal under Iranian law, and in Egypt, public decency statutes are often used to target and prosecute LGBTQ+ people. Egypt's football association stated it refused to be linked to celebrations that “fundamentally oppose the cultural, religious and social values … in Islamic and Arab societies.” Similarly, Iran’s football federation also raised “its opposition against the issue.”

FIFA's Stance on Flags and Banners

The international federation holds operational control over match venues on matchdays. Although it prohibits banners and flags with overtly political content, it permits flags expressing “sporting and social symbols,” a category which includes the rainbow flag. This policy was in effect at the most recent World Cup in Qatar and was reaffirmed after incidents of authorities confiscating flags.

  • The Pride Match was an idea created to highlight the city's longstanding tradition of advocating for equality.
  • A design contest is underway to produce artwork celebrating the occasion.
  • Planners are committed to making sure every visitor feel welcome in the city during the tournament.

The region is home to a significant largest communities of Iranian descent, a thriving Egyptian expatriate community, and rich communities representing all nations. “We’re committed is to ensuring all residents and visitors experience the warmth, respect and dignity that characterizes our region,” the statement concluded.
